It’s worth mentioning that lapis lazuli use as a pigment is not a gift of this modern age, as even in fifth and sixth century AD, some paintings have been found in different Afghan temples in which this pigment is quite prominent. Afghanistan is a country where Lapis Lazuli is mined more than any other country of the world. Similarly, the traces of this pigment can also be seen in ninth and tenth centuries Chinese paintings and some Indian wall paintings of twelfth and thirteenth century also found with this pigment.  In fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Italian painters used the lapis lazuli pigment in their paintings.

During old days lapis lazuli was considered equivalent to gold in its value. The stone was extremely popular among the Egyptians who often sent their soldiers and traders on expeditions to find out the stone of azure for amulets, jewelry, medicine and other decorative goods.

In Past lapis lazuli didn’t commonly refer as a true birthstone, but in 1912 a jewelry trade group created a list of birthstones in which lapis lazuli was also included. Nowadays, lapis lazuli is often gifted to those who born in December, as it is known as the birthstone for the month of December.

No doubt about that lapis lazuli has such a glorious past, as no other stone is parallel to it in this connection. Various kings and queens, seers, fortunetellers and spiritual heads always liked to wear that stone. It is said that Cleopatra used its pulverized form as eye shade, and a Sumerian queen Pubic often clad in a robe jutted with gold and lapis lazuli.
